SCI Foundation and Partners Unveil Bear Safety Trailer and RoboBear in Montana

SCI Foundation (SCIF) is excited to announce its partnership with Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) and Montana’s Outdoor Legacy Foundation (MOLF) to introduce a new bear education trailer and Montana’s very own Robo Bear. This collaboration highlights SCIF’s dedication to supporting state wildlife agencies and raising public awareness about bear safety.

At a recent unveiling event hosted by Montana FWP, the new education trailer and Robo Bear were showcased, offering participants hands-on training in using bear spray under pressure. This innovative training tool, made possible by the partnership, aims to educate the public on bear awareness and safety. Maria Davidson, SCI Foundation’s Large Carnivore Manager, stated, “SCI Foundation is dedicated to supporting state wildlife agencies, and we are pleased to collaborate with FWP and MOLF to provide resources that educate the public on bear awareness and safety.”

During the event, participants had the unique opportunity to practice deploying bear spray with the robotic bear. MT FWP staff and other partners were on hand to discuss bear safety practices, bear biology, and how to handle bear encounters. Mitch King from Montana’s Outdoor Legacy Foundation emphasized, “Education is key to keeping both people and bears safe. This new training trailer gives the public a hands-on way to practice with bear spray and prepare for real encounters.”

The Western Chapter of SCI further supported this initiative by donating funds for cases of bear spray for Montana FWP to distribute during educational events. Chapter President Jon Lee proudly presented a check for $7,000 to MOLF Executive Director Mitch King at the 21st annual Western Montana Chapter SCI fundraising banquet.

James Jonkel of FWP expressed gratitude, saying, “Not only will the trailer catch the eye of the crowd when we attend events, but it will also allow us to transport our new robotic bear safely along with training tools. We are very thankful for the help of partners to make this possible.”

This one-of-a-kind training tool is set to provide Montanans and visitors with a chance to practice deploying bear spray under pressure, building crucial muscle memory that can save lives and reduce conflicts.
