Estimating the population of African leopards at a country-wide scale.

SCI Foundation’s Dr. Ralph S. Cunningham Leopard Conservation Project is dedicated to conducting surveys to estimate the population of African leopards at a country wide scale. This initiative represents a pioneering effort in the field of wildlife biology, as it undertakes extensive assessments that have not been previously attempted. The project employs advanced scientific methodologies to ensure precise population counts and concrete data points.

Botswana Leopard

2018-2024

SCIF biologists and partners completed their initial surveys in Botswana, using remote cameras to cover 16,000 km² of potential leopard habitat.

They documented leopards in various environments, from Chobe National Park to agricultural areas. The findings indicate that leopard populations are widespread and healthy.

Botswana Research RESULTS

Results were used by the Botswana Department of Wildlife and National Parks to prepare a 10-year leopard management plan that was submitted to CITES in support of their leopard export quota.

South Africa Leopard

2025-Present

With the success of the leopard survey project in Botswana, SCIF is moving forward with replicating this model across the region. We are currently working with the South Africa National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) and the Professional Hunters Association of South Africa (PHASA) Foundation to implement surveys in that country. Leopards are widely distributed but quantitative density estimates are available for only some populations in hunting concessions and protected areas.
