British Columbia Grizzly
British Columbia Grizzly
SCI Foundation’s BC Grizzly Bear project focuses on studying the predation behavior of grizzly bears to inform future management and harvesting strategies for their populations.
Collaborating with First Nations in British Columbia, the project aims to address the growing grizzly bear populations and their effects on culturally significant species like caribou and moose. Over the past decade, while grizzly bear numbers have increased, populations of ungulates such as moose, caribou, Stone’s sheep, and mountain goats have declined. The suspension of licensed grizzly bear hunting in the province has raised concerns about potentially higher predation rates on these ungulate species.
In The Field
The initial step involves deploying up to 20 GPS/video collars on grizzly bears to track their movements, habitat use, foraging areas, and predation patterns. SCIF biologists, alongside Tahltan Guardians, are currently working on deploying collars. Collars will remain on the bears throughout the caribou calving season. These collars will then be remotely released, allowing for the recovery and analysis of all recorded video content.
