Snow Leopards in Nepal

Abundance and Prey Availability for Snow Leopards in Nepal

A study in Nepal demonstrated that predation of local livestock by snow leopards was less than first thought. This is important as local people who live and herd livestock amongst predators rely very heavily on yak herding for their livelihoods.  This project also helped local people learn and understand the value of snow leopards.

Species: Snow Leopard

Project Partner: KTK-BELT, Inc.

SCIF Investment: $16,000

SCIF Involvement: 2017 – 2018

Project Objectives

Little was known about snow leopard populations in Nepal or Pakistan, so this project focused on information gaps while also building local capacity and interest for conservation.  Some of the findings included:

  • Estimated the abundance of snow leopards using camera trap technique.
  • Assessed prey availability focusing on blue sheep.
  • Trained villagers in scat collection – handling, storage and preservation techniques.
  • Implemented community-based monitoring of snow leopards and developed educational modules.
  • Markhor in Pakistan

  • Snow Leopards in Nepal

  • Tajikistan Argali Populations

  • Pakistan Snow Leopard Project
