Delta Waterfowl University Hunting Program

SCIF-Sables provides annual funding to Delta Waterfowl to support their Delta Waterfowl’s University Hunting Program.

Delta Waterfowl’s University Hunting Program was established in 2017 to combat the alarming number of college and university undergrads and grad students in North America pursuing wildlife sciences degrees who lack experience with hunting. It’s estimated that as many as 70% have never hunted themselves; of those, many don’t even have family or social circles who hunt.

These students represent the next generation of professional wildlife managers and decision makers who would otherwise graduate and enter their careers without an understanding or appreciation of the hunter’s role in the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation.

Delta UHP delivers a four-step introduction to waterfowl hunting including:

  • Hunter education
  • Hands-on safety and shooting skills training
  • Mentored waterfowl hunt
  • Instruction on game care and preparation for the table, including a meal

Delta’s UHP is available to wildlife management students at over 130 colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada serving a little over 680 students in 2024-2025. They are on track to enroll 1,000 students in 2026. It’s Delta’s goal to deliver UHP at the nearly 500 universities and colleges with wildlife programs in North America. UHP is meant to inspire a personal passion for hunting and encourage participants to continue waterfowling and exploring other types of hunting. At the very least, they will take into their careers an appreciation for the hunters’ vital role in wildlife conservation.
