The Five Star Preserve located near Kellyton, Alabama, along with its outstanding staff, recently provided unique tour and learning opportunity to 21 students from Auburn University’s Wildlife Enterprise Management Program. Sponsors Holland and Carolyn Powell, Sables President Susan Hayes, and SCIF staff hosted the students and their professor, Dr. Todd Franks. The Powells and Sables also provided transportation and dinner for the event as part of their ongoing support for the program.

During their visit, students toured the Five Star facilities and land holdings, gaining insights into management practices for hospitality, game species, and habitat vitality for species such as quail, turkey, and deer. Five Star staff discussed the challenges, opportunities, and benefits of working in the wildlife industry. A highlight of the visit was a tour of the Five Star kennels, where students learned about managing the kennel and the hunting dogs used for events with members. Following the tour and staff presentations, attendees enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by the Five Star staff.
Students expressed gratitude for the hands-on experience that deepened their understanding of the Wildlife Enterprise industry as they prepare to enter the job market. One student shared their enthusiasm with Dr. Todd Franks via email, stating, “I wanted to take a moment to express how much of a success the trip to the Five Star Lodge was yesterday. I only heard positive feedback from everyone on the ride home last night, and it was clear that everyone had a fantastic time. The general manager and all the staff were fabulous. You can tell they are quality people who love what they do and take pride in their jobs. It was truly appreciated by all!”
The event marked the culmination of the SCIF-Sables University Program, which began with students attending the SCI convention in January. During the convention, students gained invaluable insights from outfitters and industry leaders through direct interaction. Further learning opportunities were provided through three virtual webinars featuring North American outfitters. These webinars enabled students to understand what it takes to run and operate facilities in various settings and how business goals differ depending on the facility’s location and clientele. SCIF Assistant Director of Education Todd Roggenkamp and Auburn University Professor Dr. Todd Franks collaborated to ensure each webinar component built on the previous one, supporting the education of future professional hunters, lodge managers, and wildlife entrepreneurs, who play a crucial role in maintaining industry stability.
SCIF-Sables and the Powells extend their gratitude to Auburn University and Dr. Todd Franks for their partnership in this successful program. Plans are underway to continue this collaboration in future years, with intentions to expand the program to Texas A&M and Kansas State University.
