Women, Orphans, Needy and Sick (WONS) – Zambian Chapter SCI Delivers Bell Blue Bags

Last September, members of the Zambian Chapter Safari Club International (SCI) Executive Committee, Maggie Rodger, Ian Robinson, Clinton Jones, John McLaurin and Laura du Plooy, together with Te Ata Headley and Everett Headley, SCI’s Guides and Outfitters Liaison, visited WONS (Women, Orphans, Needy and Sick) in Lusaka. The visit signifies the Chapter’s support of the SCIF Bell Family Blue Bag humanitarian initiative, in memory of Amy Bell, giving practical support to vulnerable communities in Zambia.

WONS is a Lusaka-based non-profit organization founded on 13 September 2002 by Eunice Shakami. What began as an act of compassion has grown into a lifeline for fifty vulnerable children. Eunice’s personal journey is remarkable. Having faced severe hardship herself, she draws strength from her Christian faith and from the compassion shown to her by the church at the age of three. It is this experience that drives her to “pay it forward” and create opportunities for others who, like her younger self, desperately need a helping hand.

During their visit, the Zambian Chapter SCI and SCI delegation delivered essential food supplies to the children and staff at WONS. They also brought toys and soccer balls. The gifts were received with cheers, excitement and heartfelt gratitude, turning the delivery into impromptu netball and soccer games.

For the Zambian Chapter SCI, this visit went far beyond a donation of goods. It was an opportunity to forge a relationship with a grassroots organization making a meaningful difference in children’s lives. In connecting directly with Eunice and the children, the Chapter’s Executive were able to see firsthand the impact that this support makes to vulnerable communities in Zambia.

By standing together with WONS, the Zambian Chapter SCI underscore the importance that sustainable use wildlife conservation and community upliftment go hand in hand. Eunice’s tireless dedication and the resilience of the children she supports is inspirational.
