SCI Foundation helps survey Yukon grizzlies to support healthy, sustainable populations.

SCI Foundation works alongside the Government of Yukon Department of Environment and the Yukon Outfitters Association launching surveys to gather data about bear populations in the Yukon Territory. The surveys are part of an ongoing effort to generate scientifically supported population estimates to ensure the future health and sustainability of grizzly bears.

In The Field

The surveys use hair snares wrapped in barbed wire placed systematically across the landscape to collect data.

The equipment, supplies, and biologists are flown in by plane or helicopter to remote locations across the expansive wilderness of the Yukon, where they collect genetic and photographic data used to estimate population density using cutting-edge spatially explicit capture-recapture methods.
