SCI Foundation has partnered with Mozambique Wildlife Alliance (WMA) to enhance elephant conservation efforts.

WMA is actively engaged in vital fieldwork throughout southern Mozambique, including the collaring of elephants to monitor their movements and implement measures to prevent human-wildlife conflicts.

Here’s a snapshot of their recent successes:

  • Increased Monitoring: WMA has successfully collared six more elephants this year, bringing the total number of monitored elephants to 35. This allows for better tracking and understanding of their movements.
  • Enhanced Rapid Response: Six Rapid Response Units have been trained to expertly guide elephants away from areas where they might come into conflict with humans, thus reducing potential threats.
  • Community Protection: Installation of electric fencing has been completed in several communities, safeguarding the crops of over 220 families. This measure significantly reduces human-wildlife conflicts.
  • Expert Collaboration: SCIF’s Director of Conservation, Dr. Comer, has collaborated with WMA to gain deeper insights into their effective community conflict resolution programs and initiatives dedicated to improving elephant habitats.

These efforts underscore the commitment to both conserving wildlife and supporting local communities in Mozambique.
