Campfire Cooking for Kids at the International Wildlife Museum

The International Wildlife Museum hosted a new workshop on November 16th, Campfire Cooking for Kids! 15 kids and their parents learned how to successfully start a campfire, keep it burning and go beyond S’mores with their outdoor cooking.

Participants made omelets in bag, which is a mess-free way for cooking an omelet over a campfire, camp stove or even at home! Just throw your eggs and any ingredients you like in a Ziploc freezer bag, smush them up and boil for about 12 minutes! They were a hit with everyone!

Next up was Walking Tacos, an easy meal in a bag. Heat your chili in the can over the fire and choose your favorite bag of corn chips. Then add toppings like chili, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream. Grab a fork and eat out of the bag!

Participants were able to make three desserts – Cinnamon Bears (crescent roll dough wrapped around a stick, then rolled in butter and cinnamon sugar), S’more variations (campers got to choose different candy and graham cracker types) and by far everyone’s favorite – Campfire Oranges! Campers hollowed out an orange and poured blueberry muffin batter in the rind, wrapped it in foil and tossed it into the coals to cook.

It was a beautiful November day in Tucson to do this workshop and IWM staff hopes to follow up in the near future with a second Campfire Cooking workshop with new recipes.

The International Wildlife Museum, located in Tucson, Arizona is excited to bring sustainable-use conservation messages to over 50,000 visitors each year with nearly half of them school-aged children.  Visitors and campers gain an awareness and understanding about how SCIF contributes to wildlife conservation around the world and how these conservation achievements would not be possible without the contribution of hunters.
