IUCN African Elephant Database

SCI Foundation is proud to contribute to the accurate survey of the African elephant while promoting responsible management decisions.  Our participation is a great counter argument to the narrative that elephants should not be managed using science-based methods.

Species involved: African Elephants

Project partner: IUCN African Elephant Specialist Group Total SCIF

Investment: $30,000

Year SCIF began involvement: 2016 (Timeline: 2011-Ongoing)

Project Objectives

  1. Reduce illegal killing of elephants and illegal trade in elephant products by utilizing science-based management techniques.
  2. Maintain elephant habitats and restore connectivity among elephant populations across Africa.
  3. Reduce human-elephant conflict by utilizing the best-available science to guide wildlife management decisions.

Anticipated Outcomes

SCI Foundation became a member of the IUCN in 2016 and has been active in supporting better management of elephants for longer than that. The Elephant Status Report is a critical resource for science-based elephant management in the region. By supporting initiatives like this report, SCIF ensures that sustainable use remains important in management of elephants and other iconic African species.

Since 2000, SCI Foundation has provided more than $80 million to promote science-based conservation through wildlife research, capacity building in governments, youth and teacher education, and humanitarian programs that show the importance of the hunting community in society around the world. Growth of SCI Foundation has continued to gain momentum through charitable donations from SCI members and direct grants from local chapters and the SCI organization. Throughout the world, SCI’s approximately 50,000 members and 190 chapters contribute time, talent, and financial support to local, national, and international projects.
